Our Family

SAS is a large institution working hard to give the best to their clients.
While SAS maintains a central office in the Santo Domingo National District, Dominican Republic, our family includes staff in Ontario, Canada and the United States, our in-country coordinators, and associated staff in 30 Provinces.

Our SAS and CCTUR Guanin, Inc., family is committed to offering our volunteers high quality and enriching volunteer and/or internship experiences, along with captivating travel and work abroad opportunities. In each of our partner locations, in Canada and USA, SAS maintains the office of a local in-country coordinator whose role is to support our volunteers.

Our coordinators have a distinguished and successful history of working with international volunteers. Before they joined the SAS Program and Project, most of our in-country coordinators served in a variety of service-oriented occupations such as expedition leaders, social workers, trek leaders, teachers, and other professions.

More about CCTUR Guanin, Inc.

CENTRO CULTURAL TURíSTICO GUANíN,INC.
"IGUALDAD, FRATERNIDAD Y ESPIRITU DE COMPATIBILIDAD"
("EQUALITY, BROTHERHOOD & SPIRIT OF SHARING")

The members of the Central Cultural Turístico Guanín ("Grupo Guanín" for short) are university students and other professionals who specialize in Hotel and Tourism Administration. The majority are from the Universidad Dominicana O & M, in Santo Domingo. Guanín is legally registered and operates as a not-for-profit cultural and tourism center (founded on March 7, 2001), distinct and separate from Student & Researcher Services--Santo Domingo. Nonetheless, various members of the Grupo Guanín are eager participants in most of our activities.

THE TOURISM SIDE OF GRUPO GUANíN's ACTIVITIES

--All "Guaninos," as some visitors from Washington, D.C. lovingly dubbed them, are dedicated to improving tourism in the Dominican Republic. They're dedicated to making the Dominican Republic the #1 tourism destination in Latin America and the Caribbean. They do this through personal contact--you won't find any Dominicans more informed about their own history and culture than the members of Grupo Guanín, nor anyone with a more genuine desire to please, sharing everything wonderful about their country with visitors.

Need a companion to go for a walk?
Ask a member of Grupo Guanín.

Need to know how to find a certain type of store or a particular restaurant?
Ask a member of Grupo Guanín. Need a recommendation for somewhere to go? Or where to buy something? Or where to eat? Or anything else?
Ask a member of Grupo Guanín.... They will meet you at the airport. They will help to teach you the beautiful Spanish language, Dominican history and culture, and the latest dance steps. They'll accompany you on historical/cultural tours and excursions. They will be your best friends. They will make sure your trip is so enjoyable that you'll want to come back again and again!

ANOTHER SIDE OF GRUPO GUANíN, INC.

--The members of Grupo Guanín know that another way to ensure that the Dominican Republic becomes the #1 tourist destination in Latin America and the Caribbean is to change some of the things that visitors (and they themselves!) see as problems.

. --Grupo Guanín and SAS are actively involved in educational projects with Dominican youth and community groups, helping them to clean up their neighborhoods and teaching them to stamp out littering across the country. --Grupo Guanín works on such community volunteer projects as tree planting, latrine construction, and the construction and repair of school and recreational facilities.

--Grupo Guanín and SAS work with selected youth groups on sports programs, educational health programs, garbage clean-up and anti-littering campaigns, and other special educational programs.

--Grupo Guanín and SAS are working on a series of illustrated regional guides to help their fellow Dominicans (and visitors!) become more aware of the rich history and culture of the nation. The guides will cover the backgrounds and local culture in each of the many different regions of the country, including but not limited to: patron saints and the celebration of their feast days, regional songs and dances, favorite foods and beverages of the region, folklore, myths, medicinal recipes, heros and heroines, products and industries, and local attractions.

--Grupo Guanín and SAS are planning an extensive eco-tourism project to attract Dominican tourists as well as international tourists to horseback riding adventures among the beautiful mountains and freshwater river valleys of Villa Altagracia.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! The members of the Centro Cultural Turístico Guanín are also involved in lots of fun fund-raising activities--they sponsor, organize, and run concerts and dances, car washes, food and beverage sales, etc. The money raised is used to fund their community and youth group programs, and also to pay for university scholarships for members of the group who are low on funds. You see, most of the members of Grupo Guanín do not come from the social level of Dominicans who normally go to university. They are members of the "struggling class." But they all help each other toward a better future, a professional future, living up to the Center's motto: "Equality, Brotherhood and Spirit of Sharing."

FUTURE PLANS OF THE CENTRO CULTURAL TURíSTICO GUANíN, INC.

The CCTUR Guanín, Inc., hopes soon to have a physical building in or near the Zona Colonial--an educational/cultural center where, in addition to all its other activities, the Dominican Republic's young people, particularly the underprivileged youth of mixed Native American and African descent (criollos/creoles), can learn to take pride in their historical/cultural inheritance, to take leadership roles, and where they can participate in exchanges with visiting youths and educators from other countries.

1) Centro Cultural Turístico Guanín would sponsor classes, workshops and publications (both electronic and hard print) on Dominican history, society and culture, putting the contributions of the country's minority peoples into proper perspective;

2) Centro Cultural Turístico Guanín would sponsor cultural events and exhibitions that highlight the roles of creole peoples in all aspects of the country's arts, artisanry and socio-cultural festivities;

3) Centro Cultural Turístico Guanín would serve as an information and coordination center for programs of education and cultural exchange, encouraging and helping young Dominicans seeking higher-level education and leadership training both locally and abroad, and would serve as an orientation and coordination center for the multitude of foreign students and youth groups that visit the country;

4) Centro Cultural Turístico Guanín, Inc., would serve as a model for similar programs of re-education, cultural pride, and leadership development in other third world countries.

Note:

CCTUR GUANíN, Inc., SEEKS YOUR HELP TO BECOME A REAL, PHYSICAL, CULTURAL AND TOURISM CENTER, PLEASE, IF YOU CAN HELP WITH THE FUNDRAISING IN ANY WAY.

--MAYBE YOU HAVE LEADS TO DEVELOPMENT MONEY FOR WHICH THE GROUP QUALIFIES?

--THESE YOUNG STUDENTS WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR ASSISTANCE.
